Wahoo's Computer & Internet Tips Newsletter - June 2006

In The News This Month...
Hello and welcome to June's Newsletter!

Can you believe June is half done already? In less than 2 weeks my son will be finished school for the summer and will be bored the very next morning! I told him I would pay him to work in the store a few hours a week but he would rather play on his computer. He just got a new game, Star Wars: Empire At War and just loves it! And he's so good at those types of games! Not me! The only game I've ever mastered is Diablo. I got hooked into that game when it came out. I still like playing it, but now I don't have as much time.

Anyways, enough blabbing, happy Father's Day for all the dads out there! And if you are not a dad, then call yours and wish him a happy Father's Day.

This month I have included 2 articles for your reading enjoyment. First one is MS Office Tip - Adjust Your Recent File Menu and the second one is Opening JPEGs in the Correct Program. Hope you enjoy them!

That's that. Thanks for reading!

Did You Know...?

A law in the United Kingdom states: It is illegal to be drunk on Licensed Premises (in a pub or bar). Mmmmm? Isn't that where you go to get drunk?

MS Office Tip - Adjust Your Recent File Menu

Do you have Office files that you are constantly opening day after day? Have you ever noticed the list of files you have recently worked on at the bottom of your File menu?

I'm sure most of you already know that if you click on one of those files it will open and save you from looking for it yourself.

But, what if you have many files you work on during the day? Office only lists the last four. Don't you wish the list could be longer or even shorter?

Whatever you want to do, here's a way to determine the number of files listed at the bottom of the File menu.

Go to Tools menu, then click Options.

Click on the General tab at the top of the Options window.

About 3/4 of the way down you should find a listing for Recently used file list: and to the right of that a space for the number of files to list. You can turn off this feature altogether by deselecting the box or setting the number of files to 0.

To use this feature and set the number of files you would like to have listed, simply change the number in the box. You may choose any number between 0 and 9. A large number is good if you have a lot of files you open.

Opening JPEGs in the Correct Program

Do your JPEGs open up in the wrong program (web browser instead of your imaging software)? Do you have a file type that isn't associated with any program? Here's how you fix it.

Open Explorer (right-click the Start button and select Explore) and head to a file you would like to either associate with another program or get associated with a program for the first time.

Once you get to the file, hold down your SHIFT key and right-click it. You will get a menu that gives you an option to "Open with..." Select that.

This will open up a screen where you can tell Windows what program to open that particular file with. Choose the program and make sure the little "Always use this program to open this type of file" checkbox is checked. Click OK.

Done deal! Windows will now open the file with the new file association.
