Wahoo's Computer & Internet Tips Newsletter - July 2005

In The News This Month...
I don't know what the weather is like in your part of the world, but here in the Robson Valley the weather has been sucking! We've had rain almost every day since the middle of June with only a couple of days of sun and warmth. And on top of that, the mosquitoes have been breeding like rabbits! There are swarms of them everywhere and you can't go outside for even a second and they're on you like flies on rotten food.

So because of all the rain the rivers are pretty high and dirty right now. But most locals don't care and want to get out so they have been using bucktails and Red Devils.

And for those non-fishermen in town who can't get outside because of the weather, we have a nice assortment of PC games, such as Warcraft III, After Dark Games, and Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption, as well as some younger kids games. If you would like more information on the above games or a price list of what we have in stock, please use the Online Contact Form on the left at the bottom.

I have included 2 articles for your reading pleasure this month. We recently acquired cell phone service here in most of the Robson Valley so the first article is Our Wireless World by Phillip Legarson. The second article is Choosing The Right Domain Name by Encargado Telosh. Hope you enjoy them!

That's that. Thanks for reading!

Did You Know...?

Flamingos are not naturally pink.  They get their colour from their food. So what do they eat that's pink? I know, pink salmon!

Our Wireless World

Whether looking at LANS, Bluetooth, or cellular, the one thing we know is that the world of technology is being taken over by wireless. For the world of communication and networking, wireless technology has changed and improved the way in which we connect.  The exciting aspect of wireless is that this technology is ever changing, promising many new and cutting edge options on the horizon.

By 2010 researchers estimate that wireless technology will be worth about $160 billion in just Europe. Half of that economy will come from data storage. There are all kinds of changes and enhancements coming, one of which is more bundled software for less money.

The goal is to keep us connected anywhere and at anytime. People are moving fast these days, and demand to remain mobile. This means accessing emails with our cell phones and finding wireless service for our laptops in every hotel.

The wireless world has made the World Wide Web even more beneficial than it was before.  For example, with the emergence of wireless technology, you can perform the same things as you do with the wired technology and then some. In addition to wireless data services, we see more and more people interested in payment services, using a phone to pay bills, check balances, transfer money from one account to another, and so on.

It was only recently that we were trying to find ways to broaden the infrastructure of the Web so that sales people could work smarter. They needed to be free from electronic ties to their offices. With wireless service, global sales teams have achieved this and more. They can now use their
phones to converse, schedule their days, send out quotes on their products and even order supplies. This is just the tip of the iceberg with new functions appearing all the time.

Every day more business gets done with wireless services. Security needs are at an all time high. Authentication, encryption, and detection are all essential for safe wireless communications. We must have security at all
levels from the cell phone and through all the gateways. We've already seen amazing changes and additional possibilities are practically endless.

Phillip Legarson is a wireless enthusiast and owner of Frdm Wireless,
the place to go for all your wireless technology needs.

Choosing The Right Domain Name

If and when you want to put up a website on the Internet, you must think carefully and decide wisely what domain name to give to your business website. That's true for anything else also such as a hobby or informational site. So, let's get down to the business of selecting a name for your spot
on the Internet.

First, let's talk about some of the biggest mistakes that people make in choosing a domain name.  When you're in business, you want to make sure that people are able to find you on the Internet.  So here are a couple of things to avoid when choosing your Internet domain name.

The basic mantra of naming your site is to avoid using numbers in your domain name. Many of the websites on the Internet use numbers either to save letters or to seem different. As an example, a person might name his or her website as www.fun4pets.com for a pet-related website. People who wish to access this site would have to make sure whether the 4 in this domain name is a number or the words 'for' or 'four'. This is how confusing it can get.

Avoid hyphens. It is not advisable to use hyphens in a domain name on your Internet site. They are not easy to remember. When people use hyphens in domain names they presume that the potential customers will remember them, which is quite unlikely. For instance, when customers see a domain name like www.fun-for-pets.com they are most probably going to type www.funforpets.com because it is more logical and definitely makes more sense. Thus, avoid superfluous things.

Now that you know what not to do, let's talk about some of the things you should do when looking for a domain name. First and foremost is to ALWAYS use the ".com" extension for domain names.  This is the standard that everyone uses when typing in a URL to their Internet browser, and if you have another extension - .net, .org, .biz, etc. - you may be sending people to another site altogether.  If the name you want is not available with ".com" then pick another domain.

Socondly, you must select a name which is easy to spell. Most people, these days, don't pay attention to spellings, and if your name is difficult to spell it will surely be misspelt. For instance, a site called
www.specialoccasions.com can have such hilarious versions as www.spechulokashens.com, and this is not the worst example; there are many much worse and more hilarious.

It would also be prudent to keep the domain name short. Two to three words, and under 25 characters, are considered most acceptable. In this way, the chances of mistyped URLs could be avoided. The chances of people making mistakes and missing letters when you give a name to your website such as www.thebestwebsiteevernomatterwhat.com is quite high.

These are only general tips to take into consideration while selecting a domain name for your site. There are bound to be exceptions. However, if you keep these tips in mind you will come up with an appropriate name for your web site that will attract potential customers. The more people visit your site the more chances you have to succeed in your business.
