Wahoo's Computer & Internet Tips Newsletter - January 2007

In The News This Month...
Hello and welcome to January's Newsletter and a new year! Two thousand and seven. Sounds so futuristic, doesn't it? I remember when I thought 2000 was so far off, now it's 2007 already!

The holidays around here were quiet. We all did good this year in terms of gifts and ate too much but that's what it's all about, right? Being with family and making a pig out of yourself and sometimes a fool, if the right beverages are present!

This month I have included 2 articles for your reading enjoyment. First one is called MS Excel Tip: One Change = Many Changes and the second one is called Windows XP Tip: Compress In A Jiffy. Hope you enjoy them!

That's that. Thanks for reading!

Did You Know...?

The law in Fairbanks, Alaska states it is considered an offense to feed alcoholic beverages to a moose. We don't need any more drunken moose in Fairbanks than we already have!

MS Excel Tip: One Change = Many Changes

Have you ever had an Excel workbook in which you find yourself constantly making the same changes to several different worksheets?

Do you find you go to the first sheet, make changes, move to the next sheet, make the same changes, move to the next sheet, again make the same changes, etc. What a pain, eh?

Want a quicker way to make identical changes on different sheets? Here's how:

The first thing you need to do is go to the first worksheet to be changed / edited.

Next, you need to select the sheet tabs of all the worksheets that should have these same changes.

To select a series of tabs, hold down the Shift key and then click on the last sheet tab in the series. You should see that the first, last and all the tabs in between are selected simultaneously.

If you have non-consecutive (ex. 1 and 3) sheets to change, hold down the Control key and click on the tab for each sheet to be changed.

Once you have all the tabs selected, you're ready to begin your changes.

So, make those changes, but only on the visible sheet. Don't click out of that sheet or you will deselect the sheets.

Are your changes all done? If so, click on another sheet tab. Immediately, you should notice that the multiple tabs are no longer highlighted.

Take a look at all the sheets you had selected to change. All the changes on all of the selected sheets, including data, formatting, etc. are completed in one move!

Windows XP Tip: Compress In A Jiffy

The ability to compress bitmap images and other large files before emailing or archiving them is a welcome new feature of Windows XP. To compress, or zip, a file or folder, right-click in a folder or on the desktop and choose New, Compressed (zipped) Folder. Drag files to this folder to compress them in the .zip file. If most of the files are in a single folder, just select the files or subfolders, right-click the selection, and choose Send To, Compressed (zipped) folder. Windows will create a new compressed folder named after the first file you selected and will include all the selected files and/or subfolders. To add files to or remove them from the compressed folder, drag and drop them as you would any folder. Naturally, you can rename the compressed folder by highlighting it, clicking it again (slowly, so as not to open it), and entering the new name, or by right-clicking and choosing Rename.
