Wahoo's Microsoft Tips Newsletter -
February 2003

In The News This Month...
Man, I tell ya, I just spent 3 days doing T4's for my clients and I don't want to see another one for a long time, at least until next year. In case you don't know what a T4 is, it's a document needed to file your income tax return. Here in Canada, employers have until February 28 to mail them out to employees and submit copies to the government. I had visions of numbers dancing in my head for the whole week! Yikes!

Anyways, spring is sort of springing here in McBride. We had a very mild winter but then this past weekend it got very cold (-28C), we had a snowstorm and it was windy as well. Typical weather for January, not almost March.

So we're hoping to have our paintball field open maybe by spring break (March 15 - 23), if the snow melts well and drains away well. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

That's that. Thanks for reading!

Did You Know...

In the city of Los Angeles, California, you cannot bathe two babies in the same tub at the same time.

Word Tip: The Word Highlighter

Have you ever been working on a Word document and come to a point where you need to enter a fact that you're not sure of? Do you really want to stop this very minute to look up the information?

There's a neat little feature in MS Word that can help you with this situation. It's called a highlight. It works just like the highlighter you use on printed pages.

The Highlight button is on the Formatting Toolbar. To use the Highlighter, simply use your mouse or keyboard to highlight (select) the text to be highlighted. Then click on the Highlight button.

That's it. The selected text should now be highlighted. By clicking on the little arrow to the right of the highlighter in the button, a colour palette will be displayed. This will allow you to change the colour of the highlighter. Sometimes colour coding information is extremely helpful. I personally like purple.

To remove the colouring completely, highlight (select) the text and select the None choice from the colour palette.

Outlook Tip: Personalized Email Sending

Do you wish you could send a personalized email to many contacts? Yes, there is a way to send a "form letter" via email using Outlook where each email is personalized to the individual.

First you would need to create your data source that contains the personalized fields (eg. name, email, etc. - email is a must). Then you would create your form letter in MS Word and select the data source then insert the data fields into the body of the form letter.

Once your form letter is ready to go, you would select Merge from the Mail Merge toolbar (or "Step 3 - Merge" from the Mail Merge Helper window [Tools / Mail Merge]).

From the Merge dialog box, select "Merge to Electronic Mail" from the drop down box. Then select "Setup" to pick the field that contains the email address and to enter the subject line for the message. You can also decide here if the form letter should go as a document attachment. Don't check this box unless that's what you want.

MS Word will merge the fields in the form letter to the data source and send the form letter as an email message using your default email account as the sender. The emails will be sent directly to your Outlook outbox for sending.
