Wahoo's Computer & Internet Tips Newsletter - August 2005

In The News This Month...
Is it really almost the end of August? Already?! I can't believe the summer is almost over and the kids will be going back to school in less than 2 weeks! I thought time was supposed to slow down the older you get, but it seems to be going at supersonic speed lately. Before I know it, Bill will be borrowing the keys to the car and bringing home girls. Whoa! I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet!

Anyways, the weather finally smartened up at the beginning of August and it's been pretty nice since. Maybe that's why the summer has flown by because of the crappy weather we got in June and July. I remember hearing the phrase of "getting an Indian summer" and as a young child thinking that meant we would have more summer holidays from school. Imagine the disappointment I felt when we still had to go back right after Labour Day!

I have included 2 articles for your reading pleasure this month. The first article is Entrepreneurial Laboratory - Market Testing Prior To Investing by Riki Trafford. The second article is Why Buy a Laptop by Christian Barzelle. Hope you enjoy them!

That's that. Thanks for reading!

Did You Know...?

The writers of The Simpsons have never revealed what state Springfield is in.

Entrepreneurial Laboratory - Market Testing Prior To Investing

"Entrepreneurial Laboratory" is what the Internet has transformed into during the last ten years.  Amazingly, the year was 1993 when Marc Andreasen launched the first ever"point & click" Internet browser called Mosaic at a trusting world.  And, an Internet usable by every person was born! You no longer needed to learn strange programming languages
before you could work a computer.  Providing that your fingers could wiggle and your sight could identify tiny images on the screen, you were able to use your computer and to communicate with lots of people.

From the time when the Internet first appeared, it contained a galaxy of stuff covering a mind-boggling range of topics. The Internet quickly became an alternative for audio systems, VCR, telephone, and in some situations, television.

But for the entrepreneur, its most compelling, and potentially life-changing role is as an almost instantaneous, very low cost medium for direct mail

No, I don't mean the TV corporate-style advertising aimed at building brand image, and winning design awards. I mean the kind of advertising which calls you to do something, rather than just smile gently and ask "what was all that about" as we often do with TV ads. The call might be to sign up for more information, download an e-book, to phone a call centre, or even bare your credit card and order goods or services on line!

In traditional Direct Marketing, the cost for setting up magazine advertisements can run into hundreds or even thousands of dollars, followed by a wait of weeks or months before the advertiser gets responses back. In contrast, the cost for an Internet entrepreneur to set up a small ad is little more than tens of dollars or as much as a couple
hundred dollars, immediately followed by a few minutes before the first visitor arrives at his website! Remarkably, an Internet ad's performance is measurable, oftentimes in only a few hours. By knowing which campaign is profitable, you can leave behind very costly and risky advertising methods.

Is this opportunity just what your business is ready for? Will your current business increase revenue upon adding a new online sales process?  Or is it a new online business venture you're ready to launch?

Considering that many of the payment, fulfillment and ordering processes can be automated - along with many sales processes too - this amazing technological medium contains outstanding commercial power.

Even though breaking into this opportunity requires a range of skills including copy writing, computer literacy and direct marketing, there are really only two fundamental actions required:

1. Getting the right visitors to come to your web site
2. Persuading them to take the action you want

Simple? Yes, in principle. But in practice there are many questions you need to answer on the way:
- who would be the "right visitors"?
- where can I find them?
- how can I get them to my website?
- are there enough of them?
- and once they get there, what should I be asking visitors to do anyway?
- how many will do what I want them to?
- how can I improve on this?

To assist clients step up the growth of their business, the Direct MO Marketing website implements effective and simple solutions for ambitious
online Entrepreneurs who desire attracting the right sort of visitors to their online business.

Why Buy A Laptop?

Millions of people now have a computer in their homes and perhaps another one they use while on the job. Although many still use the old desktop models, more and more consumers are switching to laptop computers. Convenience of use and portability are two of the main reasons for this switch. If you have not yet decided to use a laptop, here are some reasons to consider doing so.

A laptop weighs less than the traditional model of computer. This means that when you move furniture or clean around your desk area, it will be easier to lift your laptop or rearrange its location. You can scoot it forward
or move it back, or change it from one desk to another without much concern about the possibility of damaging its components. Since it comes with a lid, or cover, you can close it up to keep the monitor and keyboard clean and tidy.

The laptop is readily portable between work and home for those wishing to coordinate functions between both locations.  Rather than copying programs or files to disk to transport between the two locations, all you need to do is turn the unit off and carry it with you.  USB ports are used for the very same purpose, but the laptop allows you to use the same keyboard and programs at all times rather than adapting to more than one system.

Laptops may be used for several hours without being plugged in to recharge their batteries.  This makes it convenient to take with you to presentations or meetings to take notes, record data, or just about anything you need to get more out of such events.  You can bring your laptop along
with you to the cottage or beach if you need to finish up some last-minute work before finally being able to relax for the rest of the day.

It's clear to see that laptop computers are here to stay. As technology becomes even more advanced and yet more compressed, it is likely that tinier units will compete for popularity, like the pocket computer. The bottom line is that the old clunkers are on their way out, and perhaps with good reason. It's time to make way for new innovations that can help us move faster and link information in ways that make our lives more comfortable and meaningful. If you do not yet use a laptop, give some thought to getting one for home or office.

Christian Barzelle is the website owner of Found Laptop Group which is considered to be a key resource for laptops.
